I stopped blogging here several months ago and took my posts to Facebook. But the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to continue with this site - but be more for those who are not on Facebook....

First things first - I am reactivating Rent-A-Stew. In the mid 1970's I started a company called Rent-A-Stew, this was a company that was started by three former airline stewardesses to place trained flight attendants on corporate aircraft. We stopped pushing forward when two things happened 1) I got a full time corporate flight attendant job 2) the investors thought it was a stupid idea and that no one would use the service! Guess I was thinking way in advance of what corporate aviation would want! Who knew???

So, as things progress with Rent-A-Stew, suggestions, ideas, openings and more will be available on this blog....

I just need to crawl with this before I can take off running!!!

Seniority LIsts

With all the hubbub going on about merging seniority lists on the CO-UA merger...many would like to see it be DOH. For the pilots that will not happen. It would not be fair for either work group. UA still has pilot on furlough (both voluntary and invol) but their DOH as senior to that of the junior CO pilots. So, UA will have to bring back the furloughed pilots and this could put CO pilots on the street...not fair. At UA it takes approximately 15-20 years to make it to left seat, at CO about 5....Doing DOH would drop some of those CO left seat folks to right seat thus bringing the UA folks to left seat pretty close to right out of furlough....not fair.

This deal is going to take forever to come to an agreement on seniority for the pilot group.

There is a conversation going on Facebook in a Flight Attendant chat about CO and UA. And how CO is ticked off that IAM lost in the union vote on which union would represent all the United flight attendants when the merger is final. AFA won! CO flight attendants are ticked.

Their deal now is that they think that the UA flight attendants on voluntary furlough should be the new hires at CO! Excuse me, these flight attendants have lots of seniority and will not go to CO to sit through weeks of training, then to sit reserve in EWR until they can go back to their REAL seniority at UA. Really generous of the CO flight attendant group!!

Let's see these vol furloughed flight attendants are probably in their 50's, waiting to see if there is a buyout option for early retirement when the merger is complete. Why would they even think of going to fly at CO and sit reserve in EWR. They are probably comfortable financially..I just don't see this happening. Let AFA have the union group...the only ones bitching about the vote are the CO flight attendants and IAM...sour grapes anyone?

I am a firm believer in passing on information for free. Why should I charge or take a "commission", "incentive" or "kickback"? I pay for sites that have job listing for flight attendants and then pass on the information. People tell me about jobs and I pass it on. Some agencies contact me and ask me if I know a flight attendant with a specific language or in a specific country. I pass on any information I have and absolutely will not take a referral fee.

I took a fee once and I felt guilty about it, I am tempted to write a check and send the fee back. But it has been well over a year and, well, I am not sure the person would understand or even still be at the same location. Guess it is time for me to check.

I will continue to post jobs and notes on this site, but please do not ask me for or offer me a "commission", pay it forward - do something for someone else...but please do not send me money. If you want a commission from me...I will gladly send it to your favorite charity...

In 2006 I took a contract job for a 135 operator in Florida. There was one other flight attendant working for this company, she had been there for a few months. I came on to train new flight attendants and fly on an as needed basis. Well this sweet young thing that was there was fresh out of high school, and an absolute know-it-all! I would say hi to her and she would ignore me. I would ask her a question and she would ignore me. I would compliment her on something an she would ignore me! For me this girl was the ultimate bitch. Then it came to the time when she needed recurrent trainin (I did not do her initial). During the recurrent I used the term bulkhead...and she asked me what that was! I asked her a few more questions about the plane and she had no clue. She had been flying for 1 year and had no idea of FAA regulations...(30 seat plane). I took my time with her, got her as up to speed as the company would allow based on timing and my contract pay....

I think she felt better after recurrent cuz she then started talking to me! A few weeks later the company let her go... I stayed in touch with her. She applied for a charter airline and the new Director of Ops sent all kinds of garbage to that airline insuring that she would not get the job. She didn't! I tried to help her get back on her feet after this rude play by the 135 operator.

Eventually she got a 121 job but that airline returned their 30 seat planes and she was out of work again. I got her on at another 135 carrier where I was doing the training (30 passenger plane). She stayed a year and moved on to another 121 carrier with jets. She is still there. I helped her get this job also.

So the end of my story is....to this day she calls me "grams"...she is a kid, I am an old lady..... There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that I would not do for this person...(as long as it is legal). So, for her to read this, and for everyone to know...when I think about how our friendship evolved, how much I respect her, and how she will always warm my heart....there can be no better friendship than one that starts off rocky!! PVS - I will always be there for you...ALWAYS...

Getting Screwed Giving References!

I am reluctant to give references for people that I do not know personally. I am about to make it a personal policy that if I give you a reference and you turn around and screw it up...no second chances.

Example, I referred someone for a corporate job...told them what the pay was, hooked them up with my connection and advised them not to dicker on pay! What did they do? Tried to screw around with the pay...so this company comes back to me and asks why I referred that person!!!

Another example, I referred someone on another contract and they started the contract and then said they wanted more money! Don't do that. bad kharma! I will never give you a reference again....even though you are still my friend.

So, if you are not 1000% comfy giving a reference, don't do it.....My rant for today!

Beyond and Above of Florida seems to offer the most for your money. Plus their training cost includes hotel! They also provide a 1 year FREE membership to www.flycontract.com. They include garnishing, plating, catering etc. This gives you a great start in in-flight service. There are other companies that provide more detailed service, but they do not provide emergency training. Beyond and Above needs to update their program and get closer to compliance with FAA regulations. Not sure what is missing, but I would like to see the underdog step up and compete. Hopefully they will step up and compete, only time will tell.

CAPS - Corporate Air Parts offers a one day emergeny only training class for a reasonable price, no bells and whistles here. If you check their website you will see that they do training for certain FAA locations. Again, this is emergency only...good place for recurrent on the west coast without paying thousands.

So, there are 4 or 5 training companies in the USA that train corporate flight attendants. All are priced differently and offer some of the same modules but one offers more.

First there is FACTS - they seem to be the ones that are gobbling up all the little companies that try to work with corporate flight attendants. Other providers seem to join forces with FACTs in an attempt to create a monster training facility. For some, FACTS falls short.

Second there is Flight Safety - their big deal is training pilots and they have simulators in their Atlanta facility. Their instructors are almost all from the commercial side of flying but they are nice, friendly and offer a product to be proud of. But they still fall short of getting the best for your buck.

For those who know who I am and actually know me, I am pretty outspoken when it comes to specific topics. One concerns aircraft specific training for corporate flight attendants. My biggest complaint is the monopoly that a couple companies seem to have in this arena - They charge an astronomical fee for training and seem to have brain-washed large companies into believing that they are the only training facilities that should be accepted. This is totally wrong. First, if I am going to spell it out, In the USA the FAA does not require training for cabin servers (flight attendants) on part 91 or 135 aircraft if the aircraft has 19 seat or less. Even if you have had corporate flight attendant training you still are not permitted to operate any emergency equipment on the aircraft. They only way you may do this is if the aircraft operator has an in-house training program approved by the FAA. This means that the operator has submitted training material and manuals (ATOS) completed the SSI's and had the FAA review the complete operation of the company.

Considering that the FAA does not require training for 135 and 91 aircraft why are the operators so gung ho on these companies? All these training programs do is provide the student with information. BUT....if you have been (or are) a commercial flight attendant you already have the information on ditching, fires, equipment. What you are lacking is service training. Corporate services is in no way similar to commercial first class service.... More to follow!

procedures, first aid, etc. Progress in learning is evaluated
by written and practical examinations. A minimum passing

Reserve Schedule
Domicile seniority determines how long a FA will be
assigned to reserve. New FA's should expect to be
assigned a reserve schedule for the first 6 months of
employment.

Schedules
Flight Attendants will be awarded a schedule according to
seniority. The FA must be able to work any shift, any day, or
any hour. Overnights are required, and may be multiple
days in length. Scheduled minimum 9 days off per month
on reserve.

Uniforms
Uniforms are required to be worn while on duty and will be
ordered during training. Total cost is approximately $500
and FA's will receive a $20 per month uniform credit. Upon
separation, the company will deduct full amount of any
negative balance.

Schedule

Aer Lingus currently operates a flight from Dulles to Madrid generally every day of the year including holidays and weekends. Cabin Crew will have occasional assigned standby reserve duty at home and at the airport. Generally, schedules require 4-5 trips a month (approximately 51-54 round-trips a year; subject to change). Length of round-trip spans over 3 days. Maximum allowable flight hours are 900 per year.

Duties

Cabin Crew will be responsible for the internal cleaning of the aircraft after each flight as well as following the required guidelines for stocking and maintaining the aircraft galley and lavatories.

Working conditions

The Cabin Crew position requires exposure to air turbulence, dry air, varying noise levels from aircraft engines, and working in confined spaces. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of extensive background check, physical abilities testing, drug test, and training.

Location/Length of Cabin Crew Training

Initial New Hire Cabin Crew Classroom Training may either all be held in Dublin, Ireland or a combination of some weeks in the U.S. and the rest in Dublin, Ireland. The first portion of training is for 5 consecutive weeks with most weekends off (but this is not guaranteed). After successful completion of classroom training, trainees will complete flying exercises conducted over approximately 2 weeks.

Cabin Crew Training Compensation

Training will be paid. If/while training takes place in Dublin, the following will also apply:

Trainees will be paid an allowance while training.
Transportation to and from the training center will be provided daily.
Transportation will be provided from Dublin Airport to your lodging on your arrival in Ireland and also to Dublin Airport on the last day of training.
Initial transportation to JFK airport to fly to Dublin will be the responsibility of the new hire.
Aer Lingus will transport you from JFK Airport to Dublin and back to the U.S.
Since you would then be an active employee, your return trip to a U.S. airport may be on an interline agreement, and this ticket needs to be obtained while in Dublin at training.

You will receive a home study packet before you attend Cabin Crew training.

Accommodation Information During Training

While in Dublin, you will be staying in Roganstown House, Swords which is about 2 miles from Dublin Airport. You will stay in houses and will be transported to and from here each morning. Bedrooms may be single or shared, including en-suite bathroom, and kitchen/living room areas are shared. There are canteen facilities in Aer Lingus’ Dublin office that you will also have access to.

Rostering

Rostering will be assigned at the end of Initial New Hire flight attendant training. Assignments will be based on operational need.

Paid Time Off – PTO Time

A very generous paid time off program of 25 days annually (prorated for partial years) is in place after completion of 6 months of service. Staff must bid for vacation in advance based on summer/winter schedules using full weeks. In case of sickness or emergency, staff must call in at least 6 hours before flight schedule time in order to receive any sick/emergency pay once otherwise eligible. Otherwise, time is unpaid. Excellent attendance is expected in order to retain employment.

Travel Benefits

New hire Cabin Crew will receive a certain amount of free space available travel privileges on Aer Lingus system-wide after 6 months of hire. Current U.S. gateways are New York, Boston, Chicago and Orlando. As Dulles-Madrid is a United flight, travel benefits on that route would be under interline concessions rather than Aer Lingus. Cabin Crew also receive exceptional travel benefits with most major carriers based on space available travel and other applicable policies. (As we are an international carrier, we are not in a position to have domestic commuting jump seat agreements with domestic carriers).

Employees’ spouses, eligible dependent children, and other eligible designated nominations may also be eligible to use unlimited space-available travel privileges on Aer Lingus system wide at reduced rates.

Cabin Crew Uniform and Appearance
The basic in-flight uniform pieces will be provided for you at no cost upon successful completion of Initial New Hire training. You will be required to maintain your uniform such as alterations and dry cleaning. As a representative of Aer Lingus you will be expected to follow all uniform and appearance guidelines. You may not have visible tattoos, facial, multiple or upper ear piercing or extreme hair color or style.

standard operating procedures. Provides instruction to
passengers on use of cabin equipment. In the event of
aircraft emergency, the CSP provides directives,
assistance, and leadership to the cabin passengers.
During medical emergencies, provides first aid
assistance, communicating with medical authorities for
direction and for notification that special interventions and
assistance will be necessary upon landing.

The incumbent must prepare and interpret United States
and foreign customs agriculture clearance regulations.
Responsible for proper disposal of all regulated garbage
upon arrival at any United States port of entry airport and
for the proper documentation of disposal. Assist
passengers with high speed internet, fax machine, and
phones. Initiates, coordinates and confirms passenger
ground transportation and other services as directed by
the flight captain.

Maintain the highest standards of etiquette, protocol, and
culinary skills. Expected to manage commissary inventory,
cabin supply inventory, cabin newsprint subscriptions and
cabin laptop workstation updates. Job may require
frequent walking, prolonged standing, kneeling and
bending. Job may require performing additional duties as
assigned by the Cabin Safety Supervisor.

Incumbent(s) must keep abreast of new methods and
procedures, and continually update and hone skills related
to safety procedures, evacuation methods, etc.

Typical internal customers include members of the
Executive Office and the Administrative Council. Typical
external customers include high-level executives that are
customers and guests of Caterpillar. The position is
challenged to quickly and correctly identify problems. The
incumbent generally resolves issues following
departmental guidelines and utilizing crew resource
management.

The jobholder knows in advance the details of what needs
to be done to serve customers and the standard operating
procedures in place to accomplish it. They can change
different parts of the standard approach to serve
customers best, but cannot add or delete procedures
without approval. The team or supervisor reviews work as
it is being done and after it is completed. Impacts key
quality goals including customer satisfaction, continuous
improvement, timeliness, efficiency, cost savings, and
quality. The position monitors adherence to quality
standards and develops action plans addressing below
standard performance.

The position requires working various shifts and travels
extensively; at least two full weeks each month including
weekends.

Educational Requirements:

Other Requirements for Flight Attendants:
Those who want to work as flight attendants must be at least 21 years old. Airlines prefer to hire flight attendants who have experience working with the public. Placement for Flight Attendants:
During training, the flight attendants are assigned a base in which they will work. The bases are Houston, TX, Newark, NJ, Cleveland, OH and Chicago, IL. Although flight attendants are not required to live full time in their base city, they are required to set up some type of living arrangement that will enable them to be available to fly as needed at the Flight Attendant's expense.

Once training is completed, new flight attendants are placed on reserve status where they could remain for a minimum of one year. This means they work when called upon to fill in for absent or vacationing flight attendants or on extra flights. The Flight Attendants must be able to get to their assigned base airport within 60 minutes of call out. After being on reserve status, flight attendants bid for regular assignments, and generally get their choices based on airline system seniority.

Compensation for Flight Attendants:
The starting salary is $19.00 per flight hour with a guarantee of 80 hours per month. This equals $1520.00 per month and $18,240.00 per year gross earnings. In addition, flight attendants are paid a per diem of $1.80 for each hour of active duty.

A Day in a Flight Attendant's Life:
On a typical day a flight attendant will:
Proceed to the airport and park in a remote parking lot to take an employee bus to the terminal
Locate their assigned aircraft from their schedule and wait for their crew to board
Be briefed by the aircraft captain on emergency evacuation procedures, coordination of the crew, the length of the flight, expected weather conditions, and special information having to do with passengers
Make sure that first-aid kits and other emergency equipment are aboard and in working order
Assess the passenger cabin to make sure there are adequate supplies of food and beverage
Greet passengers as they enter the aircraft, check their tickets, answer any questions pertaining to the flight and assist them with carry-on bag stowage
Instruct passengers in the use of emergency equipment and exit row seating requirements
Check to see that passengers' seat belts are fastened, seats are in the upright position, and bags are properly stowed prior to takeoff
Assist passengers in the event of an emergency
Reassure passengers in the event of turbulence
Direct passengers off of the aircraft in the event they must evacuate due to an emergency situation
Distribute beverages and snacks
Help those needing assistance, e.g. small children, elderly or disabled passengers
Prepare reports on passengers' medical problems, lost and found articles, and condition of cabin equipment

Placement for Flight Attendants:
During training, the flight attendants are assigned a base
in which they will work. The bases are Houston, TX,
Newark, NJ, Cleveland, OH and Chicago, IL. Although flight
attendants are not required to live full time in their base
city, they are required to set up some type of living
arrangement that will enable them to be available to fly as
needed at the Flight Attendant’s expense.

Once training is completed, new flight attendants are
placed on reserve status where they could remain for a
minimum of one year. This means they work when called
upon to fill in for absent or vacationing flight attendants or
on extra flights. The Flight Attendants must be able to get
to their assigned base airport within 60 minutes of call out.
After being on reserve status, flight attendants bid for
regular assignments, and generally get their choices
based on airline system seniority.

Compensation for Flight Attendants:
The starting salary is $19.00 per flight hour with a
guarantee of 80 hours per month. This equals $1520.00
per month and $18,240.00 per year gross earnings. In
addition, flight attendants are paid a per diem of $1.80 for
each hour of active duty.

A Day in a Flight Attendant's Life:
On a typical day a flight attendant will:
· Proceed to the airport and park in a remote parking
lot to take an employee bus to the terminal
· Locate their assigned aircraft from their schedule
and wait for their crew to board
· Be briefed by the aircraft captain on emergency
evacuation procedures, coordination of the crew, the
length of the flight, expected weather conditions, and
special information having to do with passengers
· Make sure that first-aid kits and other emergency
equipment are aboard and in working order
· Assess the passenger cabin to make sure there are
adequate supplies of food and beverage
· Greet passengers as they enter the aircraft, check
their tickets, answer any questions pertaining to the flight
and assist them with carry-on bag stowage
· Instruct passengers in the use of emergency
equipment and exit row seating requirements
· Check to see that passengers' seat belts are
fastened, seats are in the upright position, and bags are
properly stowed prior to takeoff

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

SECURITY:

- Perform pre-boarding security checks of aircraft, passengers and carry-on baggage

SAFETY:

- Conduct pre-flight safety checks of cabin area

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS:

Good general health, with no condition that would be adversely affected by flight; Physically fit; able to push/pull cart/boxes in excess of 300 pounds; Professional appearance and demeanor; neat and well groomed in uniform. Must have physical dexterity sufficient to perform repetitive tasks and motions, including bending at the waist, knees, squatting, kneeling, crawling, twisting and sustaining those positions for extended amounts of time. Responsible for the safety and service of passengers on
board Mesaba Airlines aircraft and compliance with all

Achieve and maintain FAA flight attendant certification and

and beverage service, sales and deposit requirements.

luggage to meet Federal regulations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
