Cabin Crew Job Description

Customers have a variety of choices in what airline to fly. At Aer Lingus we pride ourselves on providing a high level of customer service to passengers, ensuring their comfort and flight safety, making their flying experience with us a positive one. Our North American crew are based in Dulles, Virginia flying to Madrid in a code share partnership with United Airlines.

Key Responsibilities / Duties

Responsible for safety and standards throughout the cabin of an A330 twin class aircraft.
Ensure compliance with company policy/procedures in accordance with the Aer Lingus Operations Manuals.
Maintain onboard standards of excellence.
Consistently deliver service beyond our customers expectations.
As part of our Washington Dulles team contribute to the delivery of a reliable, punctual and enjoyable service.
Ensure on-board sales targets are met/exceeded.
Responsible for inflight sales revenues and stock control.

Essential Criteria

MUST be domiciled within a 150 mile road/rail commute of Washington Dulles Airport.
Be at least 21 years of age by the closing date of application.
Must be a United States citizen or have permanent authorization to work in the United States without restrictions.
Possess a current passport which allows unrestricted travel in and out of foreign countries.
Ability to fluently speak, read, write, and understand the English language.
Must fulfill government-required criminal background checks to qualify for unescorted access privileges to airport security identification display areas. Must secure airport authority and/or U.S. Customs security badges, if applicable.
Prepared to undertake a pre selection training course that could last up to 7 weeks and may take place entirely in Ireland.
Associates Degree or equivalent.
At least 2 years experience in a direct Customer Service/Sales environment or equivalent.

Physical Requirements

A minimum of 5ft 2in (1.58m) in height, with weight in proportion, such that the ability to perform all job functions is not impacted or hindered, and able to stretch to reach 6 feet, 3 inches or higher.
Physically fit - able to stand for long periods of time, able to push/pull/lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds, able to push/pull/move beverage cart weighing up to 220 pounds, and able to reach all emergency equipment onboard the aircraft.
Vision – 20/40 corrected should not be exceeded.
Be prepared to work varying shifts and irregular/unsociable hours that include weekends & nights.
Be prepared to spend time away (consecutive overnights) from base in Europe and time on call.
Able to pass post-offer physical abilities assessment.
Pass a pre-employment drug test.
Competent swimmer, able to swim 25 metres in a pool and tread water.
Be willing to adhere to all Aer Lingus uniform standards, including that no tattoos, body piercings or tongue rings are visible in the Aer Lingus Uniform. Tattoos may not be covered with adhesive bandages or by other methods, to render them not visible.

Desirable Criteria

Have at least 1 year's flying experience as a Cabin Crew member in the last 5 years (not essential) on a commercial jet operation (i.e. airline carrying circa 80 plus passengers).
Fluent in another major European language such as Spanish, Italian, German or French (both written and spoken).

Other requirements

If furloughed from another airline and should you be hired by Aer Lingus, you will be required to submit a letter of resignation to your current airline employer and provide a copy to Aer Lingus before start date.

Schedule

Aer Lingus currently operates a flight from Dulles to Madrid generally every day of the year including holidays and weekends. Cabin Crew will have occasional assigned standby reserve duty at home and at the airport. Generally, schedules require 4-5 trips a month (approximately 51-54 round-trips a year; subject to change). Length of round-trip spans over 3 days. Maximum allowable flight hours are 900 per year.

Duties

Cabin Crew will be responsible for the internal cleaning of the aircraft after each flight as well as following the required guidelines for stocking and maintaining the aircraft galley and lavatories.

Working conditions

The Cabin Crew position requires exposure to air turbulence, dry air, varying noise levels from aircraft engines, and working in confined spaces. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of extensive background check, physical abilities testing, drug test, and training.

Location/Length of Cabin Crew Training

Initial New Hire Cabin Crew Classroom Training may either all be held in Dublin, Ireland or a combination of some weeks in the U.S. and the rest in Dublin, Ireland. The first portion of training is for 5 consecutive weeks with most weekends off (but this is not guaranteed). After successful completion of classroom training, trainees will complete flying exercises conducted over approximately 2 weeks.

Cabin Crew Training Compensation

Training will be paid. If/while training takes place in Dublin, the following will also apply:

Trainees will be paid an allowance while training.
Transportation to and from the training center will be provided daily.
Transportation will be provided from Dublin Airport to your lodging on your arrival in Ireland and also to Dublin Airport on the last day of training.
Initial transportation to JFK airport to fly to Dublin will be the responsibility of the new hire.
Aer Lingus will transport you from JFK Airport to Dublin and back to the U.S.
Since you would then be an active employee, your return trip to a U.S. airport may be on an interline agreement, and this ticket needs to be obtained while in Dublin at training.

Home Study Packet

You will receive a home study packet before you attend Cabin Crew training.

Aircraft layout, Emergency procedures and evacuations, First Aid and CPR, Self-Defense, Hazardous Materials, Security, Federal Aviation Regulations, Company Policy and Procedures, Appearance Standards, In-flight Service, Customer Service, Interpersonal Skills and Special Passenger Handling.

Accommodation Information During Training

While in Dublin, you will be staying in Roganstown House, Swords which is about 2 miles from Dublin Airport. You will stay in houses and will be transported to and from here each morning. Bedrooms may be single or shared, including en-suite bathroom, and kitchen/living room areas are shared. There are canteen facilities in Aer Lingus’ Dublin office that you will also have access to.

Rostering

Rostering will be assigned at the end of Initial New Hire flight attendant training. Assignments will be based on operational need.

Cabin Crew Benefits

There are 2 options available under the Medical Program. The company carries the majority of the cost while staff’s co share is 20% for single coverage and 27% for family for traditional POS plan ($400/$800 deductible for single/family in network with 10% coinsurance until out of pocket maximum is reached), and 19% single and 26% for family for High Deductible Plan ($1000/$2000 deductible single/family with 10% coinsurance in network until out of pocket maximum is reached.).*

Paid Time Off – PTO Time

A very generous paid time off program of 25 days annually (prorated for partial years) is in place after completion of 6 months of service. Staff must bid for vacation in advance based on summer/winter schedules using full weeks. In case of sickness or emergency, staff must call in at least 6 hours before flight schedule time in order to receive any sick/emergency pay once otherwise eligible. Otherwise, time is unpaid. Excellent attendance is expected in order to retain employment.

Travel Benefits

New hire Cabin Crew will receive a certain amount of free space available travel privileges on Aer Lingus system-wide after 6 months of hire. Current U.S. gateways are New York, Boston, Chicago and Orlando. As Dulles-Madrid is a United flight, travel benefits on that route would be under interline concessions rather than Aer Lingus. Cabin Crew also receive exceptional travel benefits with most major carriers based on space available travel and other applicable policies. (As we are an international carrier, we are not in a position to have domestic commuting jump seat agreements with domestic carriers).

Employees’ spouses, eligible dependent children, and other eligible designated nominations may also be eligible to use unlimited space-available travel privileges on Aer Lingus system wide at reduced rates.

Cabin Crew Uniform and Appearance
The basic in-flight uniform pieces will be provided for you at no cost upon successful completion of Initial New Hire training. You will be required to maintain your uniform such as alterations and dry cleaning. As a representative of Aer Lingus you will be expected to follow all uniform and appearance guidelines. You may not have visible tattoos, facial, multiple or upper ear piercing or extreme hair color or style.

I have good attendance and can make the commitment to fly a scheduled roster which consists of working varying shifts and irregular/unsociable hours including weekends and nights.
I can fulfill a government-required criminal background check to qualify for unescorted access privileges to airport security identification display areas.

Before you start filling out an application, try to gather as much information as you possibly can from your past ten years. The information that will be needed for your application and your ten year history form will include but is not limited to:

All employment (every single place that you worked in the past ten years).
All addresses of the places that you lived in over the past ten years.
All the schools that you went to for the past ten years.
If you didn't have school or a job at anytime in the past ten years, make sure that you have covered what exactly you did at those times.
W-2's for any employment that can't be verified (i.e. companies out of business) or unemployment benefit stubs for gaps in employment, etc.

Interviews

If selected for an interview, transportation is at your own expense. Be prepared to bring a copy of your certifications, licenses, passport and complete work/education history for past 10 years including school/college/employer name, address, telephone number, email, fax number, dates and explanations for any break in service. This is needed for an extensive 10 year background check. Special forms may be sent to you beforehand you will be asked to sign a Consumer Background Check Release form.
